Walàna (leggesi ualàna, ovvero erba che nasce, cresce e muore (molto raramente in verità!) nelle terre del Sud, in particolare tra le filare di pomodori) è un idea di FRANCO MANZO, autore delle canzoni, cantante e chitarrista con all'attivo 2 CD autoprodotti: Macchine con i FuXia, band emergente di grande interesse scioltasi alla fine degli anni 90, e E Nnat in cui si avvale della collaborazione di alcuni amici, tra cui Antonello Aversa che poi diventerà il bassista del gruppo. Il 1° agosto del 1998 si distingue, da solista, nel concorso nazionale CANZONE D'AUTORE "ARTE MARE" nella città di Riposto (CT), aggiudicandosi il primo posto e premiato personalmente da Franco Battiato. Dopo un esperienza in teatro con la Compagnia Stabile del TEATRO TASSO di Sorrento (NA) in Musical sulla Tarantella (in replica per nove mesi) riprende a proporre le sua musica dal vivo e coinvolge ANTONELLO AVERSA, bassista con precedenti esperienze da chitarrista in gruppi rock dellAgroNocerinoSarnese quali: Tessuto, Emicrania, Gravi da Fun Ghetto. Poi lincontro con ERMANNO GHISIO ERBA, batterista con lunghissima militanza nell'ambito del rock, punk e post punk inglese con all'attivo varie produzioni su vinile e su cd. Collaborazioni con Nik Turner (Hawkwind), Andy Anderson (The Cure), Steve Peregrin Took (Tyrannosaurus Rex ), Gilli Smyth (Gong), Didier Malerbe (Gong), Captain Sensible (The Damned), Lemmy (Motorhead), Mysterions con Question Mark (96 tears). I diversi percorsi musicali dei singoli caratterizzano in modo originale il sound del gruppo. Le esperienze dei tre convergono quindi nel progetto Walàna alla fine del 2004. Il repertorio consta di brani composti da Franco ed arrangiati con il contributo di Ermanno e Antonello. I testi sono prevalentemente in napoletano e nascono da idee di Franco, che a volte scrive anche qualcosa in italiano.

Walàna (a type of grass which grows (and rarely dies) in the south, particularly amongst the rows of tomato plants) is borne off the mind of FRANCO MANZO, author of the songs, singer and guitar player. Franco recorded 2 selfproduced cds: Macchine with FuXia, an indie band which broke up in the 90s, and E Nnat with the help of several friends and Antonello. The 1st of August 1998 Franco stands out, as a solo artist, in the national contest CANZONE D'AUTORE "ARTE MARE" in the town of Riposto in the province of Catania Sicily-, and won the first prize which was awarded personally by the italian composer and musician Franco Battiato. After a nine month stint as singer in Musical sulla Tarantella in Sorrento (Napoli), Franco resumes his personal live act and embroils ANTONELLO AVERSA, bass player with previous experiences with local rock groups: Tessuto, Emicrania, Gravi da Fun Ghetto. Then the encounter with ERMANNO GHISIO ERBA, drummer with lenghty activity in the english rock, punk and post punk scene, who played and recorded various productions on vinyl and cds. Ermanno (a.k.a. Dino Ferari) joined forces with Nik Turner (Hawkwind) to become a founder member of Inner City Unit. Dino also played with Andy Anderson (The Cure), Steve Peregrin Took (Tyrannosaurus Rex ), Gilli Smyth (Gong), Didier Malerbe (Gong), Captain Sensible (The Damned) and, in America, with Question Mark of the Mysterions (96 tears). In April 2005 the three musicians meet in a smoky rehearsal room and immediately realise that the original Walàna sound is born!
